Trip to the stunning Kimberley
Here is the map of our trip
to the Kimberley region, north of the state of Western Australia (June-July 2007).
For easier browsing, I have organised the photos into four different albums. As you will
notice, some of them contain larger panoramic photos (both horizontal and
vertical!). To view them in full (in case they stick out of your display),
you should download them to your computer and view them with a separate
picture viewer. Alternatively, (smart) Firefox users can simply right-click on the
photo and select "View Image" (Firefox should resize the photo to fit within your monitor).
In addition, Cress has written some epic travel notes for this trip too,
which you can download here
if you're interested in a good read!
Now on to the photo galleries...
- Our
4WD camper: the perfect vehicle for our trip.
-
First encounter
with the Gibb: after flying to Broome, the original plan (see this map) was
to drive to Kununurra via the Gibb River Road, a renowned 700km 4WD-only
track (which was to be the highlight of our trip), and then drive back to
Broome along the Great Northern Highway which is sealed. Unfortunately, the
bad weather had firmly decided to change our plans: parts of the Kimberley
received up to three times the monthly rain average for June in
about 48 hours! So after a few hundred kilometers along the Gibb, we
finally had to reverse and start again on sealed roads, along the southern
part of the loop.
-
Along the Great
Northern Highway: from Derby to Kununurra, with highlights including
Geikie Gorge and the Bungle Bungles (Purnululu National Park).
-
Back onto the
Gibb River Road: from Kununurra back to Broome, with the El Questro
wilderness park a definite highlight. Then, as we soon found out, driving
along the Gibb River Road (in the dry weather!) is all about driving from
one swimming hole with majestic falls and crystal-clear waters to the
next. Despite the cold temperatures of most of them, we made full use of
what was on offer!
Update (March 2009)!... The missed photo opportunity I've been
kicking myself about ever since I failed to stop while driving along the
Gibb River Road (thanks Marco and Maddie for snapping it for me!) ;-)
